Listen, you can't be THAT old :). But yes, even ten years ago when I was a teenager, we had good, clean fun, like you said. And Alpha is as safe as you can get. I got my sony T10 from there and it WAS 5-6k cheaper. And it works like rosies. So I'd recommend it. I'd recommend the Sony as well. Canon and Olympus owners seem to have some trouble or the other.
Try jjmehta.com you get bill+warranty and its close to alfa prices. The canon A570IS or A710IS are pretty good though not as slim (or as expensive!) as the IXUS series. Cheers, Exile.
sometimes, i feel for the kids these days. the kinda competition they have to face, right from getting admission in a pre-school. we never had to undergo such pressures. and we had our unadulterated childhods for sure, unlike these kids!!
if you have a friend in the US, ask him/her to buy one for you. i got the Canon 3IS for 12K, in India it costs around 20K.

Anything above SD700 is a very good bet.I've played around with quite a few in this series and it definitely has an edge over my old sony T5
